Plan, Pack, Store and Protect!
We've been helping people move into self storage units for decades and know virtually every trick, secret and strategy to make your experience as swift and hassle-free as possible. We're passionate about sharing this knowledge with our customers, so here are some helpful self storage tips to consider:
Planning
- Plan your storage space. Place items that you need to easily access in the front. Be sure to allow for walkways.
- Leave a small space between the wall and your storage items to allow for ventilation.
- Use uniform-size boxes for easy stacking. BE SURE they're strong enough to hold 25-30 pounds (it’s best not to put too much into each box).
- Label all boxes for easy identification.
- List contents of boxes on all four sides, number the boxes, seal with masking tape or glued paper tape.
Packing
- Fill each box with your heaviest items on the bottom and lighter items on top.
- Pack your boxes and other items as close together as possible to avoid moisture accumulation.
- Always use plenty of packing paper for dishes and glasses. Each item should be wrapped individually.
- Always pack books flat in small boxes for easy lifting.
- Always pack mirrors, windows, and screens on edge, not flat. Protect them by packing individually with strong cardboard.
Storing
- Always clean and thoroughly dry appliances before storing. Place a receptacle of salt inside freezers and refrigerators to help absorb moisture.
- Drain all gas and oil from engines in lawnmowers, tillers, etc.
Protecting
- Use a HIGH QUALITY lock to secure your unit. Available for purchase in the store's rental office.
- Always protect upholstered furniture and mattresses with specially designed plastic covers or sheets and blankets. Place a pallet or plastic sheet underneath.
- Make an inventory of your stored items and keep them in a safe place at home or in a safe deposit box.
