Storing My Gardening Supplies

Creating an apartment garden is a lot of fun, especially because you have to think so creatively to garden in such a small space. When I set out to create my little urban garden this year, I was all plans and dreams at first. Then, when I started to gather up my gardening supplies, reality hit. Where was I going to keep all the stuff I needed for a successful garden?

I really didn't have space for it, and was struggling to figure out where to put even the basic supplies and equipment I would need for garden maintenance throughout the summer. I talked with a friend in my apartment building, and she said that she was having the same problem. So we decided that it might be a good idea to check out self storage units in Vernon together. That way, we could split the cost of a small unit and store our gardening supplies in the same place.

It seemed like a great idea, and it's really worked out well for us. After a little bit of research, we found the US Storage Centers Vernon Self Storage location, which was the perfect option for us. The Vernon Self Storage location has very small closet-sized units, which offer about all the space we need. These units are really inexpensive. I could actually afford one on my own, but since my friend offered to split a unit, I figured why not split it with her?

We went in to sign the contract together, and we agreed that we would just take turns paying for each month throughout the year so that we would be even but wouldn't have to worry about divvying up cash every month or anything like that. It's been a pretty good arrangement for the last couple of months!

One thing that we did to make the most of the space we have available in our Vernon Self Storage unit was to get a freestanding plastic shelving unit for the storage locker. The shelving unit is great because it gives us more vertical space for putting our gardening supplies in. It's kind of like creating a better plan for our actual gardens, since the vertical space is more efficient than just using the space on the floor and stacking stuff up!

Plus the shelving allows us to keep some things separate. Neither of us minds sharing tools and such, but we try to keep our mulch and compost and whatnot separate, especially since we each prefer different kinds and also have some specialized stuff for different types of plants. Keeping things separated keeps me from grabbing the wrong bag of mulch when I'm in a hurry!

Using Vernon Self Storage for Our Tax Documents

They say the only things you get for certain in life are death and taxes. Well, with taxes comes a lot of tax paperwork, which has to be saved year in and year out. Once you've been doing your taxes for a while, it gets to be kind of a hassle to even figure out where you're going to keep all those old pieces of tax paperwork that you're required to keep around for years and years at a time – just in case you get audited.

When my wife and I didn't have room to keep our old tax returns and the documentation that went with them in our home, we decided that a storage unit might actually be a good option. At first, I was thinking that only people who have a ton of stuff they don't need use long-term storage, but when I thought about it, renting a small storage unit for our tax documents actually made sense.

The main reason it made sense for us to rent a Vernon Self Storage unit for our tax documents was that it would be a cheap way to get just the amount of extra space we needed to deal with all our tax paperwork. The paperwork had been lying around our home in various spots for several years. Every few months, we'd tidy up or rearrange, and the paperwork would get shuffled somewhere else. Obviously it would have been easy for the tax paperwork to get lost like this, so we decided to proactively find another solution.

There was no chance of clearing out a closet in our home for the tax paperwork – or even of clearing out one shelf in one of the bigger closets. There was really just too much paperwork to store and too much stuff stuffed into our closets for that to happen. So, we set out finding alternative storage options for all that paperwork, and that's when we found the US Storage Centers Vernon Self Storage location.

I happened to drive by the US Storage Centers Vernon Self Storage location one day on the way home from work, and I found that it was actually pretty close to where we lived. I wondered then if a self storage unit from the location would cost much, and if it could be a good solution for our tax paperwork problem.

That weekend, I went to talk to the manager about the cost of renting a Vernon Self Storage unit, and I was very pleased by what I found out. For one thing, the manager was quite helpful and gave me plenty of information on the self storage location and the individual units they had available. Also, the Vernon Self Storage location had several smaller unit sizes that didn't cost very much per month. They were definitely within our budget, especially since even a smaller unit would be large enough to hold not only our tax paperwork but also a few other odds and ends that we wanted to get out of the way.

Vernon – Putting My Apartment Furniture in Storage During a Trip Overseas

At my company, many employees end up overseas for a short period of time. The overseas trip is great because it can boost your career, and it's practically free. The company will pay for your lodging and necessary work-related travel, and they even end up paying for many of your everyday meals while you're there. The problem is that you do have to pay to either keep your home or apartment here in California or pay to store your stuff while you're gone.

Luckily, you know several months ahead of time that you're going to be heading overseas, so I had plenty of time to close out the lease on my apartment and to find a place to put all my apartment furniture for the months I would be gone. That place ended up being the US Storage Centers Vernon Self Storage location. It was just down the road from my apartment complex, and it was a great, affordable way for me to store my furniture while I was overseas.

I went in a few months before my trip to talk with the manager of the Vernon Self Storage location about their prices and such so that I could see if I'd end up storing my furniture with them. I really liked what I saw and heard, so I decided to come back a month before I was scheduled to leave and rent my own self storage unit.

The rental process was really simple, and they had some great first month specials going on. It was easy to work the price of the furniture storage unit into my budget, even though I ended up paying for about a month more time there than I actually needed so that I could have some extra time to pull everything out of storage and get my apartment cleared out.

One of the great things about the Vernon Self Storage location was that the manager was very knowledgeable and helpful. I went to a couple of other storage places, and they didn't know how to tell me to get the right size unit for the furniture I needed to store. The US Storage Centers Vernon Self Storage location was different, though. They were actually able to tell me exactly what I'd need for my furniture.

Plus, the Vernon Self Storage manager was able to tell me how to store my furniture properly so that it would still be in excellent shape when I got back from my trip to the company's overseas location. Here are some of the storage tips he gave me:

Create a waterproof barrier: One thing that every good contractor knows is that you should never put things that can be damaged by water directly onto concrete. Even the best concrete can become damp when the weather changes or if there are very heavy rainfalls. The best way to protect your furniture from the dampness on the floor is to put down boards or wooden pallets and then to cover that with plastic sheets to keep moisture from getting onto the furniture you're storing.

Storing Baby Stuff - Vernon

Picking Up Baby Stuff Ahead of Time

One thing my mom taught me growing up was that you should never be too proud to bargain shop! I've always been a bargain shopper for myself, and when it came to my kids, I knew I'd be the same. The problem is that bargain shopping for kids and adults is different. When I'm shopping for myself, I can buy a couple pairs of jeans on sale, throw out some old ratty ones of mine, and my closet will be none the fuller. Or maybe sometimes my closet does get a little more full, but that's not the point.

The point is that when you're bargain shopping for little ones, you're almost always shopping for the next season, or the next year, or the next five years! For instance, if you got shop at Old Navy at the end of the season, you can get clothes for the next year. Of course you're not going to buy summer clothes in the size your kid is in by September because when are they ever going to wear them?

So as a bargain shopper and sometimes a garage sale shopper for my children and, especially, my youngest baby who is in a new clothing size every two weeks, it seems like, I have trouble finding space to keep all my bargain finds until the kids are ready to use them. The problem is that they're always compounding, too. At the end of this summer, I'll buy stuff for next summer, and then at the end of the winter season, I'll buy stuff for next winter. I'll have to figure out where to put both sets of bargain-bought clothes before the kids start using the summer clothes at the end of spring. It's a bit of a nightmare!

At any rate, there's not a ton of extra space in our home, so that's why I have  a Vernon Self Storage unit at a place called US Storage Centers where I store all my bargain finds until it's time to use them. You might think it's a little ludicrous to rent a storage unit when I'm trying to save money by buying clothes on sale in the first place, but, really, it isn't. Over the course of a year, I estimate that I save well over $2,000 on clothes for my kids, but I don't spend that much on storage! It's money saved, and I don't have to find a spot in my crowded home for all those bargain buys.

I ended up renting a US Storage Centers Vernon Self Storage unit after a friend recommended that particular facility to me. She used the storage for her camping gear, and she said that the whole facility was great and the manager was nice. She was definitely right, and on my first trip out to the Vernon Self Storage facility, I ended up renting a unit with them.

Sports & Storage - Vernon

Storing My Vintage Sports Gear

I've never been the type of person to get rid of things easily. Some people call me a pack rat, but I just laugh, knowing that in the long run, I'll come out on top because of my tendency to keep things that are important to me. While I’m a bit better about not keeping things around that I really don't need any more, one thing that I do keep on hand is my vintage sports gear. Seriously, I have all sorts of things from when I was a kid, including a wooden Louisville Slugger bat that's almost as old as I am. My Vernon Self Storage unit by a company called US Storage Centers makes it possible for me to hang on to these things for my grandkids one of these days.

I'm not sure why sports gear ended up being the thing I collected most of. I guess it has something to do with the fact that I was one of those kids who played every sport all through high school, and even a bit in college. I have old football jerseys and helmets, old baseball gear, and even a few signed pieces from athletes who had yet to really make it big when they gave me their signatures. Over the years, I've just amassed this great collection of vintage sporting goods gear, much of which I actually used once upon a time.

Well, when I needed to downsize to a smaller place, I no longer had room to display all the antique sporting goods gear I had on hand, so I wasn't sure what to do with it. A few pieces that didn't mean much to me personally but were worth a bit of money, I sold. I went ahead and gave a few other pieces to my grandkids, who were pretty excited to get grandpa's old baseball glove or bat or whatnot. Heck, some of those pieces of equipment are so well-made that my grandkids actually still use them! They're not worth much money, but the sentimental value trumps everything.

Even after that, I was left with a bunch of athletic gear I just wasn't ready to part with yet but that wouldn't fit anywhere in my new place. A friend who was also an antiques collector suggested I look into storage units in the Vernon area.

At first, I was skeptical about getting a Vernon Self Storage unit. Wouldn't it be really expensive and leave my sometimes-valuable antiques very unsecured? Well, I wanted to check it out, anyway, since storage seemed like the only viable solution.
