Cleaning Out the Potting Shed

One of the things that I loved about our Montrose home as soon as I saw it was the little old fashioned garden and potting shed in the back yard. It's got little pane glass windows and a shelf that's perfect for some gardening supplies. The thing is that the little shed quickly became storage for the things we didn't want to keep in the house, rather than being used as it was intended to be used! We've spent the last two year in this home working on the actual home in the summers, and we're finally ready to gussy up the yard and garden this year.

So in order to get that process kick-started, I wanted to take the time to clean out the potting and garden shed! I mean, I knew it would be wonderful to have that space for gardening supplies and tools, and as a space to start seeds, even! That little west-facing window would let in just the perfect afternoon sunlight for new seedlings, and I wanted to get that shed cleared out so I could use it.

The problem with this was that the shed was full of things that we couldn’t get rid of. There were baby clothes we were saving for the next baby and sentimental things and boxes of old tax paperwork that we still needed to keep. The shed was really just a catch all for all our stuff that fell into the category of "we don't want or need it in the house but we can't get rid of it."

We have a little bit of attic space in our home, but it was already taken up with things like Christmas decorations, so that's why we ended up moving stuff to the potting shed in the first place.

So when it was time to get that potting shed cleaned out this spring, I decided to research my options. I knew I had friends in the area who used Montrose Self Storage for all those "we don't want or need it in the house but we can't get rid of it" items that they didn't have room for in their homes. I was determined to find a good Montrose Self Storage option for my family, too.

After talking to a few people about the different Montrose Self Storage locations in town, it became pretty obvious that the US Storage Centers Montrose Self Storage location was probably going to be the best option for what I needed. They were conveniently located, and very accessible. Plus, they had some of the best prices around, and everyone I spoke to had good things to say about them!

So the next weekend I went in to talk to the manager of the US Storage Centers Montrose Self Storage location, and I was able to figure out what I needed to know about getting a contract there and such.

Finding Room for Our Personal Paperwork

One thing they don't really tell you when you're growing up is that being an adult comes with lots of important paperwork. You have to deal with stuff like marriage licenses and tax returns that you have to keep for nearly a decade. It's kind of ridiculous how much paperwork is involved in being an adult.

So when you're trying to make do with as small a home as possible so that you can save money for the future, you've got to figure out a good place to put all that personal paperwork. I mean, just the tax documents alone can take up a significant portion of your open space if you aren't careful!

When my wife and I were trying to figure out where we were going to put all the paperwork we didn't need to use in everyday life, we decided it was time to check out a Montrose Self Storageunit. It seemed like a self storage unit would be a secure and affordable solution, and it would probably cost way less than moving into a bigger place that had room for our paperwork and tax returns.

Boy, were we right! We checked out a few different storage places in the area, but we settled on US Storage Centers Montrose Self Storage. The location was great, and the prices were surprisingly affordable.

One thing that we loved about the US Storage Centers Montrose Self Storage location as soon as we walked in was the fact that they had excellent customer service. The manager was friendly from the start, and he was great about showing us the different units and helping us decide what size we would need.

We had decided when looking at Montrose Self Storage units that if we were going to get a storage unit, anyway, we might as well get one large enough for a file cabinet along with a few other odds and ends that didn't really have a place in our home at the moment. So we went with the second to the smallest unit at the US Storage Centers Montrose Self Storage location, which was quite affordable.

The US Storage Centers Montrose Self Storage location also appealed to us because they had good security. I mean, it's not like anyone intentionally breaks into a storage unit looking for personal and tax paperwork, but it could happen. And, of course, there's lots of information on those forms that people could use to steal our identities or something!

Montrose – Storing Mom's Heirloom Furniture

When my mom died last year, it was obviously a difficult time for my brother and I. It was also very busy. It took weeks to get the funeral planned and to deal with mom's finances and legal issues. Anyway, the last thing we did was to clean out mom's home to get it ready to sell or rent. We got rid of tons of stuff. As older people are wont to do, mom had kept a lot of stuff she really didn't need, so we ended up having a Goodwill truck actually come to the house to take away all the things that we had no use for. We each kept a few keepsake items, but we generally left everything to go to Goodwill.

One of the problems, though, was mom's heirloom furniture. She had a few pieces our father had built years ago, and a few that she had been given by her grandmother upon her marriage. There were a couple of pieces that were four or five generations old! Obviously, you don't just give something like that to Goodwill. But, neither of us could figure out what to do with the pieces right away, either. I think we were just too emotionally exhausted to deal with it.

So, instead of trying to figure it all out when we really couldn't deal with the problem well, we decided to rent a Montrose Self Storage unit for the heirloom furniture for a few months until we could decide what to do with it.

We looked around for a bit, and we came across the US Storage Centers Montrose Self Storage center. The center was clean and neat, and it was well-lit. Those were good signs when we drove in on a Saturday afternoon to see about possibly renting a unit.

The other thing that really struck us about the US Storage Centers Montrose Self Storage center was that the manager was so kind. He understood completely, after being apprised of the situation, why it was so important to us that we have really secure storage that was clean, waterproof, and rodent free. We weren't just dealing with college furniture here! These were gorgeous pieces with lots of meaning behind them!

The manager really got it. He took us to show us the security system on the Montrose Self Storage location, which was impressive. Then, he showed us inside a unit, and we were impressed with how clean and neat it was. He even gave us some great tips on how to store our furniture so that it would be in just as good of shape coming out as it was when we put it into storage. Here are a few of the tips he gave us:

Protect it with cotton: The manager suggested that we get some cotton sheets (mom had about half a million that we could use!) to cover the furniture with. The dust would stay off of it better that way, and cotton could breathe better than plastic, which could trap moisture against the furniture and cause mildew or mold.

Moving Just Before Our Baby

When I first found out I was pregnant, I wanted to start nesting immediately. I wanted to buy baby room furniture and pick out paint colors and all that stuff. Unfortunately, we already knew we were moving in seven months for my husband's job, so we would be moving right before our due date. It wasn't ideal, but it had to be done. Luckily with the help of our Montrose Self Storage unit at US Storage Centers, we were able to get things ready for our baby a little bit before we moved.

You see, I'm a pretty picky shopper. I like to get exactly what I want, and I'll take the time I need to get it if necessary. When it comes to furniture and things for my baby's room, second best is just not an option. I knew it would take me months to put together the perfect nursery for my baby. The problem was that I wasn't going to have months to get the nursery ready once we were in our new home. In fact, I figured I would have a matter of a couple weeks to get it done, and even then, I was counting on our baby being "good" and being on time rather than early! I really didn't want to wait until the last minute, so we decided to rent a Montrose Self Storage unit so I could get started on baby's room early, even before we moved.

Basically, our plan was to use the Montrose Self Storage unit to store the crib set and such as I picked them up. That way, they wouldn't clutter up the house we were currently trying to sell, and they'd be all ready to move when we were ready to go. The cost of a Montrose Self Storage unit would definitely be worth the sanity I'd be saving by being able to get my nursery started before I even had a nursery!

We looked around for different Montrose Self Storage options before we found US Storage Centers Montrose Self Storage location. The US Storage Centers was the perfect location for us for a few reasons. For one thing, it was close to our current home, which meant it would be easy for us to run new nursery items over to the storage unit as we got them. Also, it was nice to be able to access our unit pretty much whenever we wanted, so whenever we happened to go shopping, we'd be able to take our items to our storage unit.

Another reason we chose the US Storage Centers Montrose Self Storage location was that it offered great pricing, and some great deals for the first few months of renting. Since we were only planning to rent a unit for a few months, this was huge for us! We saved a ton of money and ended up paying way less for storage than we thought we'd pay.

A Place for Our Family Camping Gear

When my husband and I were first dating, camping kind of became our thing. We would go camping almost every weekend in the summer. Hey, when you don't have a house or a ton of responsibilities, it's easy to just take off every weekend! Now, we don't get to go camping as much, what with the yard work and the kids' sports and such. Still, though, camping is something that our family does together frequently, and taking a family of four on a camping trip can really take quite a bit of gear. We don't think we'd be able to keep regularly camping as a family without our Montrose Self Storage unit at a location called US Storage Centers!

You might wonder how we started using an actual storage unit for our family camping gear. Well, it came about like this.

When it was just my husband and I, keeping our camping gear at home wasn't a big deal. We just had a little portion of a closet sectioned off for our small cooler, tiny tent, and couple of sleeping bags. We really didn't need much gear other than that, after all! After our first daughter was born, we realized this wasn't going to cut it anymore. Now we had to upsize our tent, and get more equipment just for her – like our huge frame backpack baby carrier so she could go hiking with us more comfortably!

For a while, we just decided to put camping on hold because we were so busy learning the ropes as new parents. But, the urge came back, and especially once we had our second daughter, we really wanted our kids to experience camping like we had done throughout our early marriage. So, we started collecting more camping gear to make family trips simpler – a portable grill, a camping mattress for the little ones, yet another frame backpack, etc.

Eventually, we were just falling all over camping gear every time we turned around in our home. So, we decided we had to have a good solution – and fast! That's when a friend suggested we look at a Montrose Self Storage location called US Storage Centers. It was really easy to find, and it was close to home. We went to the Montrose Self Storage location a little skeptical, thinking that we were going to end up spending all our camping money just to store our camping gear, which would sort of defeat the purpose.

Splitting Storage with My College Roommates

Going to college away from home is great, don't get me wrong. You get to meet new people, get outside your comfort zone and get the real full college experience. Sometimes, though, it's a bit of a hassle. I mean, you're living on campus most of the year, but for three months in the summer, you have to haul everything you own back home, unpack it, and organize it only to turn around, pack it back up, and haul it back out to school in the fall! A couple of years of this really can get old! Luckily, there are places like a Montrose Self Storage facility called US Storage Centers to make this less of an issue.

I realized after I moved into college for my freshman year that I was not going to want to haul all those college-related items back and forth every single year for the next four years. I mean, I had extra bedding, towels, school-related items, and more that I didn't really need at home during the summers. My freshman year, my family helped me move out to school, but I knew I'd be on my own in my small sedan the next year! When I talked to my three roommates, I found out that they felt the same way.

So near the end of the spring semester, we started thinking about what we were going to do with all our stuff. The college didn't offer any storage and you couldn't leave stuff in your dorm rooms, since the college dorms hosted conferences and stuff throughout the summer. Plus, who knew if you'd be assigned to the same room the next year?

So we checked into storage facilities, and we found a Montrose Self Storage location called US Storage Centers. My roommates delegated me as the official storage decision maker, so I went in to talk to the manager. I found out that you could rent units on a month to month basis, which was great, since we'd need to store our items for just barely three months. They also had great rates, especially since we were already planning on splitting the cost of a storage unit.

The hardest part for me was figuring out just how much storage we would need. We didn't have a ton of stuff, but I wanted to make sure we'd have enough. The Montrose Self Storage prices were good, but I wanted to make sure that we weren't paying money we didn't have. We certainly didn't really have any to spare, that's for sure! We ended up settling with a 5x10 storage unit at the US Storage Centers Montrose Self Storage location.

Montrose Storage - Bigger Garage

Montrose Storage

Your garage isn’t always looked at as the personal domain that the rest of the house is, even though it should be. When you have a nice house, you are eager to introduce people and entertain them in your living room and your kitchen. You are happy to wake up and spend a couple of hours there, and your garage can become the same way if you learn how to manage your self storage. Whatever it is that you are trying to get rid of – and move to your Montrose self storage location – you will be doing those items a favor. Whether they are valuable, sentimental, or just junk that you are holding onto, keeping them in your garage will expose them to repeated traffic. As people walk back and forth, slam open car doors, move around boxes and open your garage door, they might get jumbled around, banged against or moved or crushed unnecessarily. These items – if you are not storing them in your Montrose self storage area – are also getting exposed to the elements on a daily basis. Whether it is the extreme heat of the summer or the cold of the winter, your Montrose self storage unit can protect your items from the temperature by staying closed for days, weeks or months at a time.

Montrose self storage units will change the way that you organize your garage, and they will alter the entire perception that many people have of your home – and your garage especially. Montrose self storage units are an essential answer to the messiest of people, and they can change the way that people hold their house – especially for people who might joke about being borderline hoarders. Even if you are a fan of holding onto many of the things that you come across in your life, you can use a Montrose self storage location to unclutter your garage and remove some of the inessentials from your living around.

With your Montrose self storage unit, you can free up your garage to become the true living area that it has the potential to be. Most people simply use their garages to house their cars, to keep all of their unnecessary junk, and to be a place for their golf clubs, old car parts and that junky lawnmower that they intend to fix – eventually. But, the garage needs not be the dumping point for all of the miscellaneous things in your life. Indeed, quite the opposite, your garage can be the place that you go to unwind – and it can represent another couple hundred square feet of space on your property. Only with a Montrose self storage unit will you be able to free yourself up for this.
