Long Beach offers a retail sales tax program for businesses for a period of time necessary to offset construction, improvement costs, or business expansion. With this program the City offers returns to eligible businesses 50% of the sales tax generated by the business in excess of first $50,000 in sales tax. Long Beach also provides a federal contract for qualified small businesses located in distressed areas of the city to employ residents of the area and foster growth. This program is known as HUBZone (Historically Underutilized Business Zone).
The Port of Long Beach is the second busiest container port in the United States shipping of millions of tons of cargo to and from the Pacific Rim countries. The Port of Long Beach produces approximately $100 billion dollars in trade. Rail and truck traffic is heavy bringing cargo to and from the port area. Businesses that are in the process of shipping items or receiving items from the Port of Long Beach could greatly benefit from storage units.
Several freeways run through Long Beach connecting the Los Angeles and Orange County. These freeways include I-405 (San Diego Freeway), I-5 (Golden State/Santa Ana Freeways), I-710 (Long Beach Freeway), I-110 (Harbor Freeway), I-605 (San Gabriel River Freeway), SR 91(Artesia Freeway), SR 22 (Garden Grove Freeway), and SR 1 (Pacific Coast Highway). The heavy rail and truck traffic bringing vast amounts cargo to and from the Port Long Beach is very heavy and bodes well for the area to require self storage space.
The Long Beach Airport (LBG) is relatively small and serves the area and is the West Coast hub for JetBlue Airways. The Long Beach Airport is also the location of a Boeing’s aircraft production facility. California State University, Long Beach campus has the second largest enrollment of students in the State. Long Beach City College has two campuses one being in Long Beach.
