Finding Space for My Seasonal Gardening Supplies

One of the things that I love about gardening is the rhythm of it. There's a time for planting and a time for resting and a time for weeding and a time for harvesting. Those times come in such a nice, predictable pattern every year, even in my small vegetable and flower garden in my back yard.

One of the things I don't love about gardening is how many tools and pieces of equipment I only get out to use once or twice a year! I have to have these things to get the job done when the time is right, but in other seasons, I don't need them at all!

Take my tiller, for example. I decided to buy one because they're very expensive to rent, I think, and as an avid gardener, I definitely get plenty of use out of my tiller. However, I only use the tiller once – maybe twice – a year. I usually pull it out in March when it's time to till down the cover crops I've put in my vegetable patch and time to work compost into the soil. The other eleven months of the year, it just sits there, taking up space.

While the tiller is the biggest example of a gardening tool I don't use year-round, there are others, as well. In the seasons that these tools aren't being used, they simply take up unnecessary room in my garage and tool shed. I mean, I have enough room if I cram everything in, but there's not room to be organized or move around!

For this reason, I started recently using a Laguna Niguel Self Storage unit through a place called US Storage Centers. The Laguna Niguel Self Storage unit is the perfect solution for me because it gives me an affordable, accessible, secure place to keep all my off season gardening supplies when I don't need them. Here's ab it about why I chose US Storage Centers Laguna Niguel Self Storage and how I use it to make my life as a gardener easier.

Why I Chose US Storage Centers

There are plenty of reasons to choose US Storage Centers Laguna Niguel Self Storage location rather than others. The Mission Viejo Self Storage option is very affordable, which is great if you're planning to use it long-term like I do. Also, the Mission Viejo Self Storage units come in a wide variety of sizes, so no matter what you need to store, you can always find the perfect size of unit to get it stored and ready to go!

Also, the Laguna Niguel Self Storage location is very easy to access, so you can get in to get your stuff whenever you need to. This is particularly helpful for me because sometimes you just don't know when the new gardening season is going to creep up on you, and you're suddenly going to need some tool or another! I can run over to the US Storage Centers Laguna Niguel Self Storage location whenever I need to, even in the evenings and on weekends, so that makes it very convenient for me, in particular.

Finding a Paperwork Storage Solution for My Business

When I started running a small web design freelance business out of my home, I was just thrilled to not be working for "the man" anymore. I got to set my own hours, set up my own clients, and pretty much run my own show.

As a creative type, I had taken a surprisingly long time to get ready for freelancing by saving up money and making smart moves like that, but one thing I hadn't really thought about was all the freaking paperwork involved with starting and running your own business. Seriously, I think I killed a couple of trees getting this thing off the ground.

I mean, there's the paperwork from becoming an LLC, and the paperwork from the business bank account, and everything I have to keep for taxes – which is a LOT of paperwork. Typically, I stash files on my computer, but I couldn't keep everything on the computer. Plus, my accountant said she'd need to work with paper copies of all my invoices and junk since that would be easier for her. Perfect.

What the heck was I going to do with all that paper?

I mean, here I am, a single guy living the freelance life out of a one bedroom apartment. There was seriously no space to keep all that paperwork. I didn't even have an office at the time! I was just working off the kitchen table. Or sometimes sitting on the couch with the laptop on my lap while I watched House or something. But I digress.

Anyway, I was trying to figure out what to do about all the paper I had to keep when my very practical sister suggested I check into self storage units. Surely, we both thought, a self storage unit would be cheaper than a larger apartment with space for an office (which I probably wouldn't use except as a place to store paperwork, anyway!). Luckily, we were right. It was a brilliant idea, and that's how I hooked up with US Storage Centers Laguna Niguel Self Storage.

The US Storage Centers Laguna Niguel Self Storage location is pretty close to home, but that's not the main reason I chose it. The main reason I decided that it would be the storage solution for me is that they had excellent customer service and great prices. As a new freelancer, the prices were particularly important, since I didn't have a lot of extra cash to be throwing around at the time.

Why It Worked for Me

I think the main reason that a Laguna Niguel Self Storage unit worked well as a storage solution for all my business paperwork was that I could put it out of sight and out of mind. I don't really have to deal with the paperwork side of my business much, other than to file it all away for my accountant to deal with. That's why I hire her, after all!

Laguna Niguel - Storage for My Staging Business

I started staging homes professionally about three years ago. It all started when a girlfriend who was getting ready to sell her home asked me to help her rearrange and repaint it to make it more salable. I found out that I was really good at bringing out the best features in a home, hiding the worst features, and just making it look great for those sales photos. When my friend's realtor commented on how great we'd done with the home, we decided then and there that I should probably go into staging on a professional level.

With kids at home, I didn't have time to work this business full time, but I knew I could do it part time. It would be a little extra income, and, plus, it was a lot of fun! My husband and I decided to use some of our savings for the start up, and I bought a few neutral paintings, some classic looking (but cheap) furniture, and some other odds and ends that would help with a home staging. I even invested in a couple of great-looking rugs that I knew would set off hardwood floors in some homes and cover less than desirable carpeting in others.

The problem, of course, was deciding where to put all that extra furniture and stuff for my staging business. There was no way I could store it in my home, so I looked for a Mission Viejo Self Storage unit close to home. That's when I came across the US Storage Centers Laguna Niguel Self Storage center. It was perfect for my needs, and they worked with many other business customers, too.

The Laguna Niguel Self Storage Center was a great option for my staging business because they offered good prices and flexible storage unit prices. Plus, they had great security, and I would be able to get into and out of my unit pretty much whenever I needed to.

The manager of the US Storage Centers Laguna Niguel Self Storage location was really helpful, too. Since I was new to storage and the staging business, he gave me some tips on how to make the most of my storage and how to protect my business's furniture while it was in storage. Here were his best furniture storage tips:

1. Leave some space: Even though it seemed like it would save me money to pack the furniture as tightly as possible, the Laguna Niguel Self Storage manager said it would actually cost me more in the long run because I would ruin more furniture that way. Now I see how much sense it makes, especially since I'm always getting furniture in and out of the unit. With a bit of space between pieces, they get some air, and I can get them out of storage easily.

2. Pack on pallets: It's easy to get those wooden packing pallets from the garbage bin behind the grocery store, and they're a great way to keep the furniture off of potential moisture on the floor. I guess you can never be 100% sure that even the best storage unit won't leak, and the packing pallets protect furniture from possible condensation and puddles on the floor.

Storing Baby Stuff in Laguna Niguel

Learning How to Shop Smarter for Our Baby

When we first got pregnant two years ago, you could never have convinced me that my child would wear secondhand clothes or use secondhand toys. I mean, really, what kind of people would have a baby and not dress them in the latest fashions bought from the hippest stores – or at least dress them in new clothes from a box store? Not me, I thought! Eventually, though, I learned my lesson, and that's how we ended up with tons of secondhand clothes stashed for future use in our Laguna Niguel Self Storage unit.

Well, that was until the clothes we'd been gifted at our baby shower started to run out, and we had to buy baby clothes on our own. When my daughter moved into 6-9 month clothing, we really didn't have a lot for her from baby showers, and I needed to go shopping. So, I grabbed our family credit card and marched over to my favorite mall to get my daughter some clothes. I wasn't paying all that much attention to how much I was spending, and boy did I hear it when that credit card statement came in and my husband found out I'd spend over $250 on clothes that would only last for two or three months!

From there, we decided we weren't actually above buying secondhand clothes for our kid. So, I started figuring out how to do that. For our daughter's 12 month clothes, I ended up getting even more and spending only about $50 on those clothes by shopping Craigslist and garage sales! The more I started buying secondhand, the more addicted to it I got. Soon, I was garage sale shopping every weekend and buying clothes all the way up into little girls' sizes!

After a while, the clothes situation in our home got a little out of hand. Our two bedroom condo was full to bursting with baby clothes and girl clothes, and there was literally no more place to put them. My husband is the one who came up with the idea of checking out a Laguna Niguel Self Storage unit for storing all the clothes. After all, we reasoned, we were saving thousands on baby clothes in the long run, so we could afford to budget a little extra each month in order to rent a place to keep all those clothes until we needed them.

We looked around for different Mission Viejo Self Storage locations and finally found the perfect location – US Storage Centers' Laguna Niguel Self Storage location. The facility was neat, clean, well-lit, and secure. Plus, they ran great monthly specials that allowed us to save on our storage unit up front, and the cost of a closet-sized storage unit wasn't a whole lot at all.

Finding Space for Our Sea Kayaking Gear

Sea kayaking is something that my family has pretty much always done. My dad took me on my first sea kayaking outing when I was just ten, and I've loved it ever since. When I lived with my parents, sea kayaking wasn't a big deal because they had plenty of room to keep all the equipment in. For my family now, though, our apartment just doesn’t offer room for our sea kayaking gear. Instead of giving up our favorite sport, though, we decided to rent a Laguna Niguel Self Storage unit to store our stuff in so that we can continue to take sea kayaking trips as a family.

My wife is the one who originally thought of finding a storage spot for our sea kayaking gear. I was afraid it would be a little too expensive at first, but I was willing to give it a shot, since I really wanted to continue sea kayaking. At that time, we didn't have gear of our own, and we only got to go a couple of times a year when we were at my parents' home. I was really eager to get our own family out on the water more often, so we decided to try looking for a Laguna Niguel Self Storage unit.

Our list of top three Mission Viejo Self Storage locations included one US Storage Centers Laguna Niguel Self Storage location. We looked at each of the three locations based on where they were, how high their prices were, and how accessible our sea kayaking gear would be. Since we've need quite a bit of space for putting our kayaks in the unit, we needed an affordable place with ideally sized units, and we ended up deciding that we liked the Mission Veijo Self Storage option through US Storage Centers best.

Of the three locations, US Storage Centers Laguna Niguel Self Storage was not the absolute cheapest, but it was a little closer to our home, and it was much nicer than the other two options. When we visited, we were impressed with how the units were put together to be impervious to the weather and how they were really easy to access. During gate hours, we could get back into our unit at any time without even having to let the manager know we were one site.

Besides this, US Storage Centers Laguna Niguel Self Storage was very secure, which was something else we were concerned with, since we would be investing quite a bit of money into our sea kayaking gear. The individually alarmed units and the fact that we could choose our own lock for our unit just made us feel that much better about storing our sea kayaking gear in this particular location.

We actually decided to go ahead and snap up the right sized storage unit through Laguna Niguel Self Storage by US Storage Centers before we even bought our kayaks, let alone all the other gear we'd need. We already had camping gear that we would probably take with us on most of our extended trips, and it was nice to get it out of the garage and into our storage unit – where it would be out of the way but also more organized.

My Self Storage Story - Laguna Niguel

Self Storage While Selling a Home

One thing you don't realize until you go to sell your family's home is just how much stuff you have! When we first found our realtor, she told us to go through the house with the eyes of strangers. The goal was to make it look clean, neat, and neutral. That meant all the extra toys, family pictures, and personal knick-knacks had to go. But where were we supposed to put them all? Our realtor suggested a Laguna Niguel Self Storage center called US Storage Centers.

So, we went down to this Laguna Niguel Self Storage place to check out prices and options like that. In the end, we decided that it would be a good idea to get a 10x10 storage unit. It might be a little bit bigger than we needed, but the prices were affordable, and we decided we'd rather end up with too much space than too little!

At any rate, once we rented our storage unit from US Storage Centers Laguna Niguel Self Storage location, we started going through our home and cleaning stuff out. Before we moved items into storage, we had a huge garage sale to get rid of all the things we knew we wouldn't need or want in our new home. Then, we started packing up boxes to move to our Mission Viego Self Storage unit.

The managers at the Laguna Niguel Self Storage facility we really helpful, and we got most of our packing supplies from them. They gave us plenty of tips on how to pack up the storage unit to use space as effectively as possible and how to pack boxes efficiently. They had some great packing supplies, too, which were affordable and sturdy enough to trust with all our precious photos and valuable decorations and things.

The realtor helped us decide which items to put into our Laguna Niguel Self Storage unit. In the end, we ended up putting away all our family photos, most of our knick knacks, and even many of my kitchen appliances and such. That way, the kitchen cabinets would look bigger, and it would look like we had more counter space, since nothing was out on the countertops!
