Finding a Paperwork Storage Solution for My Business When I started running a small web design freelance business out of my home, I was just thrilled to not be working for "the man" anymore. I got to set my own hours, set up my own clients, and pretty much run my own show. As a creative type, I had taken a surprisingly long time to get ready for freelancing by saving up money and making smart moves like that, but one thing I hadn't really thought about was all the freaking paperwork involved with starting and running your own business. Seriously, I think I killed a couple of trees getting this thing off the ground. I mean, there's the paperwork from becoming an LLC, and the paperwork from the business bank account, and everything I have to keep for taxes – which is a LOT of paperwork. Typically, I stash files on my computer, but I couldn't keep everything on the computer. Plus, my accountant said she'd need to work with paper copies of all my invoices and junk since that would be easier for her. Perfect. What the heck was I going to do with all that paper? I mean, here I am, a single guy living the freelance life out of a one bedroom apartment. There was seriously no space to keep all that paperwork. I didn't even have an office at the time! I was just working off the kitchen table. Or sometimes sitting on the couch with the laptop on my lap while I watched House or something. But I digress. Anyway, I was trying to figure out what to do about all the paper I had to keep when my very practical sister suggested I check into self storage units. Surely, we both thought, a self storage unit would be cheaper than a larger apartment with space for an office (which I probably wouldn't use except as a place to store paperwork, anyway!). Luckily, we were right. It was a brilliant idea, and that's how I hooked up with US Storage Centers Laguna Niguel Self Storage. The US Storage Centers Laguna Niguel Self Storage location is pretty close to home, but that's not the main reason I chose it. The main reason I decided that it would be the storage solution for me is that they had excellent customer service and great prices. As a new freelancer, the prices were particularly important, since I didn't have a lot of extra cash to be throwing around at the time. Why It Worked for Me I think the main reason that a Laguna Niguel Self Storage unit worked well as a storage solution for all my business paperwork was that I could put it out of sight and out of mind. I don't really have to deal with the paperwork side of my business much, other than to file it all away for my accountant to deal with. That's why I hire her, after all! |

Laguna Niguel - Storage for My Staging Business I started staging homes professionally about three years ago. It all started when a girlfriend who was getting ready to sell her home asked me to help her rearrange and repaint it to make it more salable. I found out that I was really good at bringing out the best features in a home, hiding the worst features, and just making it look great for those sales photos. When my friend's realtor commented on how great we'd done with the home, we decided then and there that I should probably go into staging on a professional level. With kids at home, I didn't have time to work this business full time, but I knew I could do it part time. It would be a little extra income, and, plus, it was a lot of fun! My husband and I decided to use some of our savings for the start up, and I bought a few neutral paintings, some classic looking (but cheap) furniture, and some other odds and ends that would help with a home staging. I even invested in a couple of great-looking rugs that I knew would set off hardwood floors in some homes and cover less than desirable carpeting in others. The problem, of course, was deciding where to put all that extra furniture and stuff for my staging business. There was no way I could store it in my home, so I looked for a Mission Viejo Self Storage unit close to home. That's when I came across the US Storage Centers Laguna Niguel Self Storage center. It was perfect for my needs, and they worked with many other business customers, too. The Laguna Niguel Self Storage Center was a great option for my staging business because they offered good prices and flexible storage unit prices. Plus, they had great security, and I would be able to get into and out of my unit pretty much whenever I needed to. The manager of the US Storage Centers Laguna Niguel Self Storage location was really helpful, too. Since I was new to storage and the staging business, he gave me some tips on how to make the most of my storage and how to protect my business's furniture while it was in storage. Here were his best furniture storage tips: 1. Leave some space: Even though it seemed like it would save me money to pack the furniture as tightly as possible, the Laguna Niguel Self Storage manager said it would actually cost me more in the long run because I would ruin more furniture that way. Now I see how much sense it makes, especially since I'm always getting furniture in and out of the unit. With a bit of space between pieces, they get some air, and I can get them out of storage easily. 2. Pack on pallets: It's easy to get those wooden packing pallets from the garbage bin behind the grocery store, and they're a great way to keep the furniture off of potential moisture on the floor. I guess you can never be 100% sure that even the best storage unit won't leak, and the packing pallets protect furniture from possible condensation and puddles on the floor. |
