Finding a Place to Store Our Family Paperwork Paperwork. It's one of the parts of life that I hate the most, but what can you do? Because I work outside of the state we live in, my family hires a live-in nanny for whom we pay employment taxes, and we deal with not only our own but also my mother's taxes, we have a ton of paperwork come tax time. And, of course, all that paperwork has to be saved for a ridiculously long time. Well, about three years ago, we had had enough of trying to figure out where to keep the paperwork. We really don't have a huge house, and we both work outside the home, which means we like streamlined, simple solutions when it comes to things like paperwork that we just don't want to put much time into. So instead of messing with trying to rearrange our entire home office or whatever so that we could get enough space for all the paperwork we have to keep, we decided to check out a Laguna Hills Self Storage unit. Here's a bit about the storage unit we ended up choosing and how storing our family's tax and other important paperwork there works for us: US Storage Centers Laguna Hills Self Storage The US Storage Centers Laguna Hills Self Storage location was one that we'd heard about from friends. They had apparently used that self storage location for a while when they were in the process of moving across town, and they had really good things to say about it. So when we decided we needed to find a new paperwork solution, we checked them out. I must say that I was immediately impressed with the Laguna Hills Self Storage location. The grounds were tidy, and the storage units were neat and watertight. The security system was great, too. That was important to me because I wanted to make sure that our personal paperwork would be as secure as possible. I mean, I didn't need to store it in Fort Knox, or anything, but I would like to know that my paperwork is safe. To increase the security of some of my more important paperwork from potential fire and water damage (I mean, no self storage place is completely immune to that, no matter how wonderful, right?) I did store the originals of some of my more important papers – passports and marriage certificate and birth certificates and stuff – in a waterproof, fireproof box in the storage unit. It just seemed like a good idea, even though we've never had problems with water or fire at the Laguna Hills Self Storage location. |

Laguna Hills - Storing My Parents' Furniture My family has always been close, and we loved getting together at the family home up until last year, when my parents became too ill to care for the home any more. My husband and I had created an in-law suite beside our home just to take care of my parents when they got to this phase of life, and we prepared a few months ago to move them into our home so I could take care of them like they'd always taken care of me. The biggest problem with the situation was sorting through my parents' extra stuff. You can collect so many things in a home that you've lived in for fifty years! We needed to clear out the home because we were planning to rent it to a family friend for a few years, until my sister and her husband could move into the home while they started their own business in the area. Sis wanted to keep a lot of my parents' furniture for their home so that she could have a few rooms as they were when we were growing up, but we had to figure out where to store the furniture in the meantime. That's when we came across the US Storage Centers Laguna Hills Self Storage location. It was the perfect furniture storage solution for our family! My sister and I went together to check out the Laguna Hills Self Storage center. It was easy to find, and we found that it had good prices and great security. All of those things made us more comfortable with storing our parents' old furniture there until my sister was ready to move it back into our childhood home. One thing that was great about the US Storage Centers Laguna Hills Self Storage center was how helpful they were. The manager of the place was great about helping us figure out what size unit we would need, and he didn't oversell us at all. Actually, he gave us some great furniture storage tips that would help us whittle down the space we needed so that we could get a smaller unit! He also gave us some tips to help us store the furniture safely so that it would be in great shape when we went back to get it. Here are the tips he gave us: 1. Leave some room for air: We wanted to get the furniture into the smallest possible unit to save money, but we didn't want to ruin any furniture, either. The manager of the Laguna Hills Self Storage center said we would need to leave a little air flow space between piece of furniture to protect against damage and mold, so that's exactly what we did. It doesn’t have to be a lot of room – just enough to allow for air flow and to make it easier to maneuver furniture out of the unit. 2. Put pallets on the floor: The easiest way to protect furniture from possible water damage is to put wooden pallets on the floor to raise the furniture up. They're cheap, and they make it easy to keep furniture from getting damaged by water that might leak under the door or something. Even though we were pretty sure our storage unit wasn't going to leak a lot, we did want to protect against the possibility. |
